If I had my own cute paw rating system I would mark this with a spooky skull with ten tentacles up.
"Nymphs of the Stratosphere" is not about Nymphomaniac girls screwing around in high orbit, so the title would lead you to believe. Don't let that stop you from grabbing this DVD, though. This is one of the more beautiful, if not most beautiful, moving and emotionally stirring titles I've come across in a very long time.
Now Nymphs does not have a cut and clear plot line to follow, far from it. It is more a collection of stories that detail the wide spectrum of human emotions and behaviors good and bad.
Something you will notice, other than its remarkably beautiful character designs, is that it is extremely quiet. This does not have any negative affect on the dialog or story because every silent moment speaks ominous volumes.
The first episode gives you a good feel of what the title will become by introducing you to the world it is set in. Things start off with a raven haired Nymph sharing her body with a very talented musician. She's illustrated as a delightfully naïve, playful, and seductive before she flutters off to the heavens above. Second, we're shown a large thug violating a very small blonde nymph. To give an example of the scale: cram a giant redwood tree through the tip of a ball point pen. With a smile, the Nymph dispatches him in a fitting manner. To conclude, we see a sultry businesswoman trolling the streets at night, looking for female companionship. She's being followed home by a demure scarlet haired Nymph. Girl-girl fun with toys ensues before our mysterious nymph floats away into the clouds.
Episodes 2 and 3 are the real heart and soul of this title. In episode 2, we're introduced to a young man who spies a girl pleasuring herself on a fire escape while watching a couple getting their freak on. She catches him and disappears into thin air. He thus becomes infatuated with her. After hearing rumors, he starts searching through online forums for information on these beings called nymphs. Soon after that, our heavenly angel Floy enters his life.
Things aren't all sunshine-and-daisies here — along with the regular nymphs are these "defective" nymphs. The defects can't float away; they have numbers behind their ears and unmentionables. This is where we meet the more depraved forms of human behavior. We find a fan boy who has caught and caged one of the defective nymphs. When he's not on his computer making the local weather lady topless, he tortures the nymph while he masturbates. He keeps her on a diet of his semen, with tragic results. The guy shows no remorse and he only remarks his disappointment that he got a broken one. More scenes of increasing neglect and abuse follow.
What makes these winged beauties even more special and mysterious is that they all lack genitalia, which are very important in an h-anime. The nymph girls are all into anal because don't have much choice. How Nymphs are made is an enigma since they don't have any reproductive organs.
"Nymphs of the Stratosphere" is a great title with wonderful character designs; a very interesting story that sank its talons into me. I recommend this to anyone who wants more than just a flesh flick h-anime.
